Very difficult to get to the rooms - narrow stairs - corridors like a labyrinth - rooms very small - installations in the bathroom very inconvenient - employees friendly

The breakfast (which was not included in the room price) was 'adequate', but not of the standard you expect in Scotland. Cooked breakfast on cold plate, so bacon (one small rasher, tomato (one small slice of tomato) was cold on arrival. The sausages were 'catering' with no flavour. Yoghurts poor quality. Nasty packs of marmelade with no orange in them. Just not a very good experience and I would not have it were I to go back there. Bathrooms - no handle in bath, felt dangerous and no hairdryer. But very well positioned. Rooms good sized and beds comfortable. If you have a lot of luggage it would be difficult becasue of all the stairs and passageways (no porterage).

This is a good option as it is close to all the sights, the room comfortable and the service good. However, it isn't particularly quiet so keep this in mind if you're a light sleeper. Late night/early morning revellers walk past and loiter outside.

Great quality for a low price! We stayed for three nights. The room was very clean and cosy, though pretty basic (as expected at the price). A good central location for sightseers, a short walk to central Edinburgh, Princes Street and Waverley Station.

I am pleasantly surprised with the quality that I got at this hotel. The bathroom is fantastic - ultra modern. The surrounding is quiet and only 5 minutes walk to major shopping centers. I will certainly stay here again whenever I go down to Edinburgh. The staf worth mentioning, they will try to accomodate every requests. Highly recommended..!!

good old town location. Approximately a 20 minute walk to the Royal Mile Street even closer to Princess Street. Hotel is a bit worn but not too bad for the price. No liftif that is important. Staff was helpful. We would stay there again.

The Cairn is within 5-10 minutes walking distance from city center, train station, and 5 minutes more to Royal Mile. There are restaurants and some shops in immediate area. Staff are very friendly and helpful althought sometimes desk staff did not have enough knowledge of city to be helpful with specific questions. But, the main tourist information is in city center a short walk away. They do have high speed wireless internet but it is not in all of the rooms in the main hotel. It is in the lobby there that has comfortable furniture for checking emails, etc. The hotel "annex" rooms which are across the street have high speed in all of the rooms at least as far as I know. I would certainly recommend the Cairn for reasonably priced accomodations. I am traveling alone and spent 6 nights there. Also, I booked for 3 nights initially and was able to negotiate part of the room price down for the next 3 nights.

This was our first time in Edinburgh and Cairn hotel is pretty close to Princes St. and city center (20 min. walk, not 10 min.). Very quiet location and we had a very nice room. The scaffolding in front of the building is a little off putting at first, seems like it's been there for years since I read the reviews which already mentioned it before deciding on this hotel. There is no elevator but our room was on the 2nd floor so it wasn't much of a struggle. The front desk employees were always nice and ready to answer any questions. Best of all, breakfast consisted on hot and cold choices which included eggs, bacon and sausage as well as cereals. We had a very nice stay and would recommend this hotel to anyone travelling to Edinburgh.

The hotel is beeing refurbished at the moment. So it looked like a big construction site from the street. Fortunately it was great from the inside, quiet and roomy. Great breakfast. Only the breakfast room was a bit dirty due to the construction works. Great value for money.

The hotel did not state that they were have building work done on their website. So, when I arrived there was scaffolding along the front of the hotel. My room was at the front of the hotel where all the work was being carried out and was very noisy, with workmen passing by my window. When I went to reception to ask if it would be possible to move rooms although they found me another room they were less than happy at my request. At breakfast time, there didn't seem to be any kind of order of staff present, crockery and cutlery were missing from the tables etc. I would have prefered to have a cooked breakfast but there was no one to ask and when one did appear, she seemed that she couldnt be bothered. I didn't have breakfast there again due to the disarray. I would'nt recommend staying here.

Booked for 4 nights, but decided to move out after the first. Rooms were small, dirty, noisy and smelly (we changed from the first room we were offered). On the positive side the staff were friendly and obliging. Moved to the Malmaison in Leith, which cost slightly more, but was worth it - although further from the city centre, it was well served by local buses and taxis, and I would heartily recommend it (it is available via Venere, but not as an online booking).

A good tourist base situated close to all attractions. Staff are very helpful but breakfast seems to be a problem when groups are there. The independent visitor seems to take a back seat and doesn't get the service they deserve when groups are there. The reception staff are very helpful and any problems are immediately sorted out.

Utterly terrible hotel - thank God I only stayed one night. A toilet door that jammed from the outside, so I had to get a repairman up at midnight to indulge in a pee! There was a dangerous pool of water around the TV jack on the windowsill, and the TV did not work. After a complaint, the picture was still very fuzzy and it was basically a 1970s TV. The staff were obliging and tried to help, but the owners had put no money into the hotel. Very cold rooms and instant coffee, although a waiter took pity on me and gave me a weak but at least better pot of real coffee. Sweaty sock left under bed by maids (I only discovered as I was leaving). The staircase to the rooms was actually unstable, which is a real health and safety problem. My complaint drew no offer of a refund or anything else - and this dump cost £75, worse than anything I have ever paid for in London. The only good points were the fact they let us leave our luggage there the second day, and it was well located. STAY AWAY FROM THIS ****HOLE.

We came for the rugby match scotland/france,the hotel is close to the center and the pubs and the Murrayfield stadium.Car hire is also close, it is easy to walk to the central area of the city. breakfast is OK, the prices climb high on special events in all the city. WE HAD AN EXCELLENT STAY

Our stay at the Cairn was flawless. It is located within easy walking distance of the central Old Town area and Edinburgh Castle. Breakfast was great and the staff very helpful. As with most UK hotels, rooms are pricey for what you get, but the Cairn is well priced for Edinburgh. If forced to make a complaint, the heat was not yet turned on and so we couldn't warm up the room in the morning - but this was very minor.

Excellent overall. Good value for money. Really enjoyed our stay. The only issue was that whilst rooms were generally clean it would appear that the hotel did not have a decent carpet hoover! The hotel is not in the prettiest of locations.

The hotel is slightly better than an average 1-star hotel. The location was good--about 10 minutes walk from Waverly train station, and on a direct busline to the seaside areas. Breakfast, though not great, was included. The rooms were clean and adequate.

The Cairn Hotel is central, clean and cheap with no frills; it was perfectly comfortable but curiously unwelcoming. It does have reasonably priced single accommodation, which is an advantage.
